OpenAI's help center describes a planned retirement of Custom GPTs and encourages users to consider plugins as replacements. It says it plans to help users migrate GPTs to plugins.
Planned dates
The FAQ lists dates for Enterprise workspaces: an admin notice on September 11, 2026, a migration target on September 17, 2026, the end of new custom GPT creation on September 25, 2026, and retirement on December 11, 2026, when custom GPTs stop running. The FAQ says dates may change and that availability varies by plan.
What happens to your original
After you migrate, the original stays usable until retirement but becomes read-only. Finish essential edits first.
What to do now
- Run the migration checker.
- Read when custom GPTs retire and whether yours will stop working.
- Use the checklist.
